Almost all of our couples are looking for those ‘special moment’ images. So picture standing in one of the fields opposite the grounds at The Compasses on a delightful summer evening, with the sun setting on the horizon in front of us, the sky aflame with a palate of deep orange and red, gently subsiding into deep purples a vast hue of fiery oranges – We know we can provide this setting for you! Our wedding venue truly is a special place that has hundreds of testimonials from our happy newlyweds!
Our grounds have a stunning surrounding countryside, beautiful views and easy access to regional and national transport hubs. 30 minutes from Stansted and Chelmsford d. And 45 minute journeys for most transportation via train.
We are lucky enough to have won a whole shelf of awards! One of the reasons for this is our reputation for serving great food and our reputation for relaxed and informal but excellent service.

We have all experienced the sinking feeling of being told the staggering price of a round of drinks at the bar of a wedding venue, knowing that you have another 10 hours of either going thirsty or emptying your wallet. We take time to keep an ensure we are affordable. By staying competitve we can let the champagne flow and the entire party stay fed and watered!
Wedding budgets can be a treacherous place. A minefield of stress and family politics. Quite rightly, you should expect an open and honest breakdown of your costs, not some of your costs at a certain packaged rate. Our venue hire pricing is completely transparent and is not based on the season you choose to get married in. We feel summer weddings shouldn’t be financially penalised for the weather, we also understand the climate we are in!
We have 2 pricing options – weekend or weekday and all you need to do is contact us for a visit and you won’t look back.
Our very own Jane used to be a florist! In fact she was part of a team who won a Gold medal at Chelsea Flower Show back in the days when television was black and white! If you are planning to do flowers yourself or would simply like some free advice on who, what, where and when, Jane is happy to slip on her florist hat and help you out.Along side that, we have a whole store of wonderful props accumulated from our event management work, that you are welcome to hire. This can both simplify and reduce the cost of the day for you. Which is, after all, our aim!
We are delighted to welcome the bride, bridesmaids, and close guests to arrive early at the premises should they wish to make the most of the celebrations. Our on-site accommodation offers the perfect opportunity to turn your wedding into a relaxed, immersive experience rather than a single-day event.
With 2 newly built, beautifully appointed rooms available, along with a private hot tub, you can settle in the night before, or even a few days ahead, and truly unwind. Enjoy a relaxed get-together with your closest people, soak under the stars, share laughs, and toast to what’s to come before the excitement of the big day begins.
Whether it’s a calm morning of preparation, a pampering pre-wedding soak, or an intimate evening spent reconnecting with friends and family, our accommodation allows you to slow down and savor every moment. From late-night conversations beneath the stars to starting the ceremony feeling rested, present, and unhurried, arriving early transforms the lead-up into part of the celebration itself.

Tucked away from the main event space, the suite provides a calm, secluded retreat where you and your bridal party can relax, prepare, and enjoy the moments leading up to the ceremony without interruption.
The space is exclusively yours, allowing you to get ready at your own pace in a peaceful, unhurried environment. With ample room for hair and makeup, comfortable seating, and plenty of natural light, it’s ideal for both professional preparations and those quiet, meaningful moments shared with your closest friends and family.
